Summary
Survey Lieutenant Erena Calgary flees into a cave with a few dozen children: the only survivors of an expedition to repair the ecological damage to a long-abandoned Earth. Her nanotechnology devices tell her that the deaths of her comrades are due to an 'attack': something so ancient that she has never even heard of it.
For the sake of humanity it is as well that the cave contains the Bolo Victorious, left weaponless and derelict by the degradation of age. Calgary's nanites can make one major repair before they expire... so she must choose either to cure her mortal wounds or to repair Victorious and place the children in the care of the ancient machine that understands this thing called 'war'.
